Things To Consider When Shopping For A Wood Stove For Your Home

Home & Garden Blog

If you want to heat your home with wood, you will need to select a wood stove or fireplace insert to do the job for you. There are different types of stoves on the market that you may want to look at, and an excellent place to start looking is a wood stove showroom where a stove sales rep can walk you through features and designs that may be best suited to your needs.

Wood Stove Types

Standard wood stove designs are the most common that you will find on the market, and they work well but can have a lot of heat loss up the chimney as the smoke exits the stove. The best way to combat that is with a damper system that you can use to close off some of the smoke and heat leaving the stove through the flue, but that can also reduce the fire size and the heat output of the woodstove.

One option is to use a catalytic woodstove that recycles the exhaust gases before leaving the firebox to increase the efficiency of the heat produced by the woodstove. With these systems, the smoke from the fire circulates inside the firebox and through a catalytic device that extracts additional heat from the gases before they go up the chimney.

This produces less smoke and heat in the chimney and reduces the need to adjust the damper to regulate heat in the home. Some of these wood stoves have a self-adjusting valve in them to control the heat for you and keep your home at a consistent and comfortable temperature.

The stove sales representative can show you models that offer this technology and how they work when considering options and brands for your home.

Fireplace Inserts

Some of the same companies that make woodstoves for your home also make fireplaces or inserts that can be installed in your existing fireplace and chimney. These fireplaces offer the same kind of efficiency as the stove and if you are interested in exploring that option, talk to the stove sales rep about what they have to offer.

The stove sales representative will go through different models with you and have someone come to your home to measure your existing fireplace to ensure that the model you would like will fit properly. The fireplace models come in different sizes, so finding one that fits your home is not overly complicated, and it is an excellent way to reuse the fireplace built when the house was constructed.

Heating with wood does come with some additional work, but adding a fireplace insert can make the system work better, burn cleaner, and make heating with wood more manageable. Talk to a supplier to learn more about available stoves, including Blaze King fireplaces.

Double Up: Bunks Beds as a Small Room Solution

Having to place children's furniture in a small bedroom presented a problem for me. With two growing kids, I needed a dresser to accommodate both boys, as well as two beds. With two beds, desk and chair, toy chest and floor lamp, the room seemed overly crowded. My solution came with a highly functional bunk bed. Bunk beds take up minimal space. Better yet, my choice was a bunk that included a storage drawer. This compartment is used for storing the boys' small toys and other necessities. I didn't have to have a separate toy chest, so I reduced clutter which was great! When you have multiple children all in one room, you need all the help you can get!
