Interior Shutters: How A Simple Design Feature Can Be Functional

Home & Garden Blog

Window coverings are always a challenge in any home. There are numerous considerations to be made when deciding how, or even if, a window should be covered. Shutters are a solution many people ignore because they may think it will prevent access to the window, be overly formal or not be available to fit an unusually shaped or over-sized window. This is all untrue, as shutters make accessing the window as easy as any other treatment, can be either casual or formal and custom-ordered models can be made to fit nicely in any window. In addition, there are many other concerns shutters can resolve.

Light and Privacy

It is difficult with drapes, blinds or shades to have both natural light and privacy. With shutters, homeowners can install double-hung models. This makes it easy to open the top section to allow in light during the day, while the bottom can remain closed for privacy. This is also a good solution when the view out a particular window is unappealing. The slats can even be opened at a variety of angles, to allow in just the right amount of light.

Cat-Proof Screens

Many cats are notoriously dangerous to window screens. When the home is on the second floor or higher, screens can even be a safety issue if a cat pushes its way through. Shutters make it possible to allow air to filter through by opening the window and the shutters at the top, where the cat is less likely to be able to reach. Cats are intelligent, and can be very insistent about getting what they want. This means it may be necessary to have a latch installed that will allow the blinds to be secured shut at the bottom, preventing the cat from pulling open the shutter.

A Timeless Design

Shutters have been around for hundreds of years, even the interior models. These designs are a basic, classic look that work beautifully in practically every type of decor. The hardware and materials the shutters are constructed of may change slightly, but the appearance of the ones available today are almost identical to those installed generations ago. This makes it possible to purchase a good set of shutters, and as long as they are kept cleaned and maintained, still have them in use decades later without looking dated. This is almost impossible to imagine with any other window covering.

Protect Against Intruders

All window coverings are a security feature because when they are closed, they prevent thieves from being able to spot things they would like and to see if anyone is actually home. Shutters are even more secure because they are an additional layer a burglar would have to fight with to get into the home. Since the most attractive home to a thief is the one that is the fastest to get in and out of, something this simple could make the home with them seem like too much effort. Security, or rolling shutters, are an additional exterior option that are used for homes and businesses in unsafe areas. They are good for protection, but are not used for decorative purposes.

Double Up: Bunks Beds as a Small Room Solution

Having to place children's furniture in a small bedroom presented a problem for me. With two growing kids, I needed a dresser to accommodate both boys, as well as two beds. With two beds, desk and chair, toy chest and floor lamp, the room seemed overly crowded. My solution came with a highly functional bunk bed. Bunk beds take up minimal space. Better yet, my choice was a bunk that included a storage drawer. This compartment is used for storing the boys' small toys and other necessities. I didn't have to have a separate toy chest, so I reduced clutter which was great! When you have multiple children all in one room, you need all the help you can get!
