Tree Management Tips To Keep Your Yard's Growth Healthy And Beautiful

Home & Garden Blog

Trees growing in your yard give many benefits, such as shade in the summer, a wind break in the winter, homes for wildlife, and a boost to your property's value. But in order to plant and take the best care of your trees, you may need some extra knowledge of care and the help of a professional tree service. Here are some tips to help you care for your trees and promote healthy growth and improvement to your yard's landscaping.

Maintain the Base of the Tree

After you have planted a new tree in your yard or if you are caring for an existing tree, it is important to take care of the soil around the tree's trunk. This perimeter directly around the tree should not include any lawn growth up to about two feet around the trunk. Build up a raised edge around the outside of the perimeter to help keep water within this area when you irrigate your tree. Don't build the soil up around the base of the tree because it can promote rot, fungus, and other diseases in your tree's health.

You can plant some vegetation around the base of your tree as long as it is able to survive in low sunlight. However, this can require more moisture to the area to irrigate your tree and your vegetation, so layer some mulch onto the soil. The mulch will act as a barrier to prevent evaporation and hold moisture into the soil for both types of landscaping.

Manage Tree Trimming

Occasionally there will be times when you will need to trim your tree's branches to protect and maintain its health. In the spring, for example, you may notice a tree in your yard with some dead branches. It is important to remove these dead branches to prevent stress to the tree and the chance of the branch falling off and potentially causing damage to a power line or nearby structure, or injury to someone.

Always contact a tree professional to trim back branches on your tree. They can manage the trimming so the rest of the tree is not damaged. And they can inspect the tree for any signs of illness disease, such as missing bark or oozing areas from the bark in addition to cracks or holes in the trunk.

If you need a tree pruned back from power lines or pruned for better fruit production, a tree service company will know how to handle this. They can also maintain a newly-planted tree for support to keep it growing straight for better health later in its life.

Double Up: Bunks Beds as a Small Room Solution

Having to place children's furniture in a small bedroom presented a problem for me. With two growing kids, I needed a dresser to accommodate both boys, as well as two beds. With two beds, desk and chair, toy chest and floor lamp, the room seemed overly crowded. My solution came with a highly functional bunk bed. Bunk beds take up minimal space. Better yet, my choice was a bunk that included a storage drawer. This compartment is used for storing the boys' small toys and other necessities. I didn't have to have a separate toy chest, so I reduced clutter which was great! When you have multiple children all in one room, you need all the help you can get!
